National Construction Code (NCC) slip resistance requirements

As of 1 May 2014, the Building Code of Australia (BCA) introduced Deemed to Satisfy provisions specifying minimum slip resistance requirements for landings and ramps in Class 2-9 buildings and stair treads or nosings to treads for all classes of buildings.

Table 1 below outlines the minimum wet pendulum test result classifications required to comply with the NCC. These requirements apply to all finishes and surface types including timber when tested in accordance with AS 4586-2013, Slip resistance classification of new pedestrian surface materials.

Stair treads and a stairway landing (when wet) P4
Nosings for Stair Treads and Landings in Buildings - Covered by NCC Volumes 1-2
Dry stair tread, a stair non-skid nosing strip and a stairway landing P3
Wet stair tread, a stair non-skid nosing strip and a stairway landing P4
Ramps in Buildings - Covered by NCC Volumes 1-2
Ramps not steeper than 1:14 (4.1 degrees) gradient (when dry) P3

Slip resistance solutions*

For both interior and exterior applications, Intergrain UltraGrip is a powdered slip resistant additive that may be added to timber coatings. Intergrain SlipResistant Decking Oil is premixed with UltraGrip for a subtle textured finish on exterior walkways. Table 2 below outlines the slip resistance wet pendulum ratings that may be achieved when using these products in accordance with instructions and when tested to AS 4586.

*UltraGrip reduces the sheen level of the final finish. A finish must be maintained to ensure consistent slip resistance. First indication of the need for recoating will be observed as patchiness or discolouration on edges or areas where insufficient product has been applied, or if slip resistance has reduced.
